| | A Woman's Work
In honor of Women's History Month, Bekah Brunstetter reflects on being a woman in the theatre.
Who
is more awkward, more vulnerable? Girls, or Boys? Personally, I think
we are equal in this department, and that it's just part of being
alive, but I do believe that guys are better at pretending to be
neither. Us ladies, on the other hand, I think we tend to wear our
hearts moreso on our sleeves. Thankfully, we like to talk to each
other. Incessantly. We form friendships, and we tell each other
everything, the horrible, embarrassing details of our lives. Why do we
do this?

| | SPOTLIGHT ON
Dave Malloy
by Christopher Borg Dave Malloy
Writer/performer/composer/sound designer, Dave Malloy, was nominated last year for Outstanding Original Music for his electrifying score in Beowulf - A Thousand Years Of Baggage, the inventive and raucous rock-musical produced by Shotgun Players in association with Banana Bag & Bodice. Dave
was also the winner of a 2009 Jonathan Larson Grant and a recipient of
the 2009-11 NEA/TCG Career Development Program for Theatre Designers! You can experience his work right now through the end of the week in Three Pianos, as part of the Ontological Theatre's Incubator Series. Written and Performed by Malloy along with Rick Burkhardt and Alec Duffy, Three Pianos, directed by Rachel Chavkin is described as a deconstruction of Franz Schubert's Winterreise song cycle: According
to David, the show features the three performers, each at their own
piano, as they "lead the audience through their respective passions for
Schubert's famous song cycle on winter heartbreak, performing the
songs, grappling with fundamental questions about the nature of music." "Compositional mayhem, shifting rivalries, and some unfortunate butchery of the German language ensue." In
the quick moment I caught David between gigs I managed to glean that he
is already scheduling future shows at LaMama ETC, Clubbed Thumb and
Berkeley Rep among others. Three Pianos is playing through March 20th at the Ontological Theatre at St. Mark's Church. Go to TheaterMania.com for more information.
